I went to Ottawa Rockcliffe Airport a few times to make Squirrels. This is a great activity for a summer camp. It’s not only fun for the camp participants but it’s a blast for staff, volunteers and parents. 🙂

Donald Qualls of High Point, NC send this picture in.
He tells me he learned the art of free flight aviation with the Strat-O-Bats in Seattle, WA. After being away from that hobby for more than twenty years he downloaded the free Squirrel instruction sheet and made this model.
This model so happens to have the world record flight of 1:14 (one minute and fourteen seconds).
Well that’s what I believe. Donald has the record (from the following video) and I’m assuming it’s the same model in the video.
Here are a couple of experiments with foam.
One is a winglet system that curves the wing and clips into place to facilitate easier gluing.
The other is a plane made from foam and tissue. I tried to minimize the foam use by cutting the parts out of each other. Then fill the gaps with tissue.
This was one of the first Dayton experiments.
